Barbara Karst Bougainvillea is a  fast growing woody vine or sprawling shrub distinguished by large, bright magenta-red bracts surrounding tiny white flowers and thorns. Its blooms are showiest from late spring through fall.  Leaves are dark green, broadly ovate with slightly wavy margins

Description

USES

  • Vine on trellises, arbors, fences, pergolas, or walls. Can be pruned into a hedge, grown as a cascading groundcover, or attached along to structures or arches
  • Works well in containers
  • Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies

HARDINESS ZONE

  • USDA Hardines Zones 9 – 11
  • Can tolerate minimum winter temperatures of about 20°F to 25°F
  • May suffer foliage loss in frost but typically regrows

 

ROOT SYSTEM

  • Shallow but vigorous root system, well-suited to sandy, loamy, or rocky well-drained soils
  • Not considered invasive to structures

MEASUREMENT & SIZES

  • Bush forms may be managed to stay in the 4 to 8 ft range via pruning and container culture
  • Can grow up to 30 feet if left unpruned

WATER NEEDS

  • Deep – Infrequent watering
  • Drought tolerant and prefers the soil to dry slightly between waterings
  • Overwatering may reduce flowering

LIGHT NEEDS

  • Full sun – At least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best blooming
  • Reduced light results in fewer and less vivid bracts

  • Fast Growing – Can grow up to 3 feet per year under ideal conditions
  • With proper care, it quickly covers trellises, fences, walls, or arbors
